From Lightning Crack to Bolt: The Electrifying Challenge Redesigned and Refreshed

As industry leaders, our talented in-house Product Design team have been innovating existing challenges to ensure we continue to deliver the very best in fun climbing. Following the refresh of Junction launched earlier this year, we are proud to announce the second challenge refresh of 2026; Bolt.

More than just a new name, Bolt has been given an entirely new look and feel designed to excite climbers while delivering practical benefits for operators.

Let’s explore what’s new…

Bolder Colourway

We’ve transformed Bolt’s aesthetic to create greater visual impact, both within the arena and across marketing content. Moving from muted yellow panels to a bold new colourway of vibrant purple and bright yellow, complemented by contrasting holds and a distinctive half-and-half split colour design, Bolt now delivers a much more striking visual experience.

Improved Holds

To improve both maintenance access and the climber experience, we’ve replaced the traditional bouldering holds with upgraded dome holds. The previous dome holds that we manufactured were solid, heavy and permanently fixed in place, whereas the upgraded hollow, lightweight design is front-fixed and can be easily removed when required for maintenance. The new domes are also manufactured from durable textured plastic, replacing the previous textured paint on wood. This provides a higher-quality, longer-lasting finish that won’t wear down over time.

The crack holds on the refreshed Bolt have also been redesigned with a more angular shape, giving climbers greater opportunities to rest and making the challenge more approachable. The material has been carefully considered, with textured surfaces indicating suggested foot placements and non-textured surfaces highlighting suggested hand placements. These differences in texture are intended to subtly guide climbers, helping them navigate the route with greater confidence.

Lighting Component

Despite its name, the original Lightning Crack challenge did not feature any lighting effects. As standard, Bolt now includes lights that illuminate the crack holds, cycling through white, blue and yellow with gentle transitions between each colour.

An optional corner mould lighting add-on is also available, either as part of the initial design or as a retrofit at a later stage. Our designers have also ensured easy access to the electronic system from both the front and back of the challenge, making maintenance simple and straightforward.
