We recently caught up with Simon, our trailblazing multi-franchise owner, who launched his first Clip ‘n Climb centre in Wandsworth in February 2024, followed by a second at The O2 just eight months later. Simon shared an unfiltered look at the challenges and triumphs of opening two centres in such rapid succession.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first became involved with Clip ‘n Climb?
My journey into the adventure leisure industry began with visits to various Clip ‘n Climb centres with my son. Like most parents, I was immediately impressed by how much fun it looked and how excited he was to give it a go. Captured by the brand and captivated by the concept, I later discovered Clip ‘n Climb at the National Franchise show in 2022. It was then that I decided to embrace a new chapter as the owner of Clip ‘n Climb Wandsworth.
Q: What initially attracted you to the idea of owning a Clip ‘n Climb franchise?
My background is in finance – I worked in the city for many years working very long days. But over time, I realised the importance of work-life balance. I wanted something that would allow me to be more present for my family while still running a business I was passionate about. Clip ‘n Climb ticked all the boxes.
Q: What inspired you to open a second Clip ‘n Climb centre?
From the outset, my vision was to expand if the first centre proved successful. With my business background, I recognised the potential synergies of owning multiple sites. Sharing staff, software, and resources not only enhanced efficiency but also increased profitability. Expansion truly allows economies of scale to come into effect.
Q: How has managing multiple sites differed from managing a single location?
The second site was a lot smoother because we knew what to expect. We were better prepared, and the transition was much easier. For example, the manager from our Wandsworth site helped oversee the launch of the new centre at The O2, which made the whole process less stressful. The lessons learned the first time around definitely paid off.
Q: Did you have any specific criteria or strategy when choosing the location for your new centre?
The O2 location was unique – a chance I just couldn’t pass up. Initially, the property agent suggested it, and when we toured the site, we saw potential in what was essentially an eyesore area. Danny (Commercial Manager at Clip ‘n Climb) and I saw an opportunity to transform an unusual space into something incredible, and it’s been a fantastic decision.
Q: What do you think makes the Clip ‘n Climb business model so flexible for franchise owners?
I looked at several franchises before deciding on Clip ‘n Climb, including big names like McDonald’s. While some of those are great, they’re incredibly prescriptive – you’re essentially tied to the business 24/7. Clip ‘n Climb is a happy medium. It allows me to have other business interests while still being hands-on when I choose. The flexibility means I can take my son to school and pick him up, which is invaluable.
Q: How does Clip ‘n Climb help franchisees achieve a strong return on investment?
The operational support is second to none. Marcus (Franchise Account Manager at Clip ‘n Climb) and his team are incredibly helpful, especially in the early days. From training to streamlining operations, they make jobs that could be overwhelming much more manageable. It’s a complex business with a lot of moving parts – climbing times, waivers, a café, party groups and much more – but Clip ‘n Climb’s guidance helps you hit the ground running.
Q: How has having multiple centres impacted your overall business growth and profitability?
It’s been transformative. We’ve been able to leverage one site to support the other – for example, staff with specific expertise, like climbing instruction, can work across both centres. This kind of resource sharing boosts efficiency and profitability.
Q: What do you love most about the Clip ‘n Climb brand and its values?
I love the uniqueness and simplicity of the product. I challenge any parent to walk past a Clip ‘n Climb without their child saying, “That looks amazing, I want a go!”. It’s instantly appealing to families. Plus, the emphasis on health and safety really stood out to me – and this gave me peace of mind when I first considered the franchise.
Q: How do your centres reflect the spirit and ethos of Clip ‘n Climb?
The branding of the centres is bright, clean, and fun – which really sets the tone. It’s all about creating an environment where everyone feels like they can achieve something, no matter their age or ability.
Q: How do your customers respond to the Clip ‘n Climb experience? Any stories or feedback that stand out?
The Google reviews speak for themselves. Parents often tell us it’s their kids’ favourite activity, and we’ve even had birthday parties where every guest is asking when they can come back. That kind of feedback makes it all worthwhile.
Q: How has Clip ‘n Climb supported you as a franchise owner, especially as you’ve expanded?
The support has been incredible. When scouting for new sites, the team helps evaluate potential locations and even creates CADs (computer-aided designs) for the potential centre. Within an hour of sitting down with the Clip ‘n Climb team, we’ve usually mapped out an entire centre. Their expertise in designing spaces ensures everything runs smoothly.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering opening a Clip ‘n Climb franchise?
Location is key – find the right spot. Also, budget carefully. There may sometimes be surprise costs that are out of everyone’s control, especially in areas like London. So make sure you have a reserve, just in case. Finally, hire a good centre manager early on. Having someone solid in place made all the difference when we opened at the O2.
Q: Are you planning further expansion, or do you have any exciting developments on the horizon?
Definitely. I’d love to expand to four or five centres in the next few years. We have already started discussions about the next centre. Watch this space!
Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your journey as a multi-site franchise owner?
Creating 70 new jobs, many of them for 16-17-year-olds who are getting their first experience of work. That’s been very fulfilling.
